What's new in April 2003

Hi guys!

First up, I'd just like to thank you for all your mail and the kind words that you continue to send in. Though it's not a regular occurrence, a few years ago I met up with one of our subscribers and his wife as he was travelling from the States to Dubai through London. Evidently passing through again he generously left a couple of bottles of wine for me at the 'Chess & Bridge Centre'. If you are still reading this, "thanks Jim and best wishes to the lovely lady". More importantly, thanks you guys at Euston road for not drinking them. The temptation must have been great!

I'll log on soon to check how the forum is going but in the meantime, in this month's update you will find the following offerings:

Shirov - Tiviakov:

A Yugoslav Attack and a rare example of why 'knights on the rim are dim'!

Becerra Rivero-Shabalov:

Black prevents a kingside attack but suffers in the centre.

Berg - Lie:

An old style Yugoslav 9 Bc4 with ...Qa5. White is behind the times.

Fernandez Garcia-Teran Alverez:

White goes backwards and that's where he stays. Sorry I'm being biased again!

Saravanan - Ramakrishna:

A neat tactic and does Black have something up his sleeve?

Also, it has to be seen to be believed (but yes it really does happen!):

see Gretzer - Wind for the surprising next move!

Keep the e-mails coming in and I'll do another grab-bag soon. Bye for now.

Chris
