June '00 Update

Yugoslav 9 Bc4

Yugoslav 9 O-O-O

Classical

Hi there!

No mail this month and so I thought I'd do something slightly different. I've provided a sample of Dragon games played around the world in the last couple of weeks in order to see where the trend currently is.

No Accelerated variations I'm afraid but three 9 0-0-0 Yugoslav Attacks. This seems to be where it's at at the moment with one 9…Be6 encounter, a 9…Nxd4 10 Bxd4 Be6 one and a 9…d5.

There is an offbeat line where Black delays castling, a theoretical 9 Bc4 with …Qa5 and an interesting 9 Bc4 with …Rc8 but not …h5.

A Classical Variation wraps up June's coverage which includes games at a variety of time limits. Obviously there are bound to be errors in the quicker games, but that just adds to the entertainment!

I'm off to play in a couple of tournaments (at last!)

See you next time

Chris

Yugoslav 9 Bc4

Back in business? Could it be that after 9 0-0-0 in the Yugoslav Attack, 9...Be6 has been unjustifiably written off?

The 'Blitz Bluff' Don't get too carried away by Black's victory here as a closer inspection reveals its frailties.

Yugoslav 9 O-O-O

That ...a6 and ...b5 Dilemma This positional queenside expansion is a nice concept, but is there really time for it in the Yugoslav Attack?

So Right And So Wrong! Nice combinational Black play gives him a winning position, but a simple tactic by White rescues the situation.

One Way and Then The Other A visual game in which both sides have their fun attacking the enemy king.

So Many Moves, So Little Time! Another entertaining blitz game, but of surprising theoretical significance.

The Exchange Sac vs The Outside Pawns Thematic play by Black, but it still goes horribly wrong for him as extra queenside pawns prove more important than the centre.
