We start our August 2001 Najdorf/Scheveningen update with 6 h3 resurfacing against the Najdorf.

In Buckley-Hunt, AUG01/01, Black got a reasonable position, but drifted in the complications. I've done well in limited play with 7...d5!?, equal I believe.

Chabanon-Fressinet, AUG01/02, is a position I'm very familiar with. I've seen it come from a Benko Sozin most of the time. White's pieces looked poised for attack, but carrying it out isn't easy. The breaks with e5 and f5 are difficult to set-up.

I've included 2 instructive examples from the old days. Tisdall-Hort, AUG01/03, and Tukmakov-Csom, AUG01/04.

Good Luck!!

The August 2001 B90 to 99 Najdorf update is about move orders.

In both Zagrabelny-Bezemer, AUG01/05, and Yu Shaoteng-Zhao Jun, AUG01/06, good players didn't know to play ...Be6 before ...0-0. It doesn't seem like a big deal, but g4 is tough to deal with.

See everyone next month!

Our English attack August 2001 update sees no decrease in popularity.

Lets begin with Krush-Le Siege, AUG01/09, where Black tried a ...Nc6 idea. I don't trust it though, Black's play isn't threatening as compared to Ljubojevic-Kasparov, AUG01/10, where Black focused on the e4 point.

Movesesian-Nielsen, AUG01/07, with the N rearrangement is very reliable for Black.

If you like messy tactical play then Arizmendi Martinez-Cvitan, AUG01/08, is up your alley. Both kings are wide open anything can happen!

Greetings everyone!

Lets start off our August 2001 Richer-Rauzer update with the topical f3 lines of which we have 2 examples. In Nijboer-Peek, AUG01/12, Black was fine out of the opening but lost control with the useless 16...a5?. Decent tries include 16...Bb5!? as mentioned and 16...Ng8. I'm still trying to figure out which is better 11...h6 12 Be3 h5 or the immediate 11...h5 both look alright. Black is finally starting to solve these f3 lines. It's about time!

My recommendation is stay away from Black's position in Myo Naing-Dwyer, AUG01/14,. Counterplay is hard to come by. Go back to Benjamin - Gulko (October 2000 I believe) for better play from White.

In my favorite line Charbonneau-Krush, AUG01/11, saw Black become concerned with defending her h-pawn instead of going for dark-squared play (like a million Kozul games!) Still she woulda been fine after a Q trade.

Rochina-Gershon, AUG01/13, saw the old tricky Margate variation. White sacs a piece for some long distance attacking chances, but I'd take Black anytime. I've also thrown in another example Kreiman-Escobar Forero, AUG01/15, showing how hard it is for White to mate. Instead of the very sharp...Qb6 Black has ...Bd7 if he so chooses.

Hope this update finds everyone well!

Hello everyone!

Our B32 to B33 update sees some stirring in the Kalishnikov.

If 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 d4 cd4 4 Nd4 d6 5 N1c3 a6 6 Na3 b5 7 Nd5 Nce7 8 c4 Nxd5 9 exd5 isn't your cup of tea then check Nijboer-Ikonnikov, AUG01/17, where White got a nice edge playing positionally.

In Wedberg-Nataf, AUG01/19, Black tried one of the crazy ...f5 ideas, the drawback is for the imbalance it creates White gets a positional grip on the light squares. Even though I've seen American GM Shabalov get good results Black's game is suspect. Black Sveshnikov players have to pay attention!

Once again we see 13...Rb8?! this time in Shivaji-Delaune, AUG01/18, and as usual Black suffers greatly.

Good Luck!

Welcome to the August 2001 Taimanov/Paulsen-Kan update.

Lets begin with the most topical line in R Anderson-Goldin, AUG01/22. Black played 6...Qb6 and White met it with a very passive set-up posing zero problems for the second player. It seems like the young Ukranian GM Ponomariov is the only one to defeat this system. One thing is clear... if White wastes time Black gets an extremely easy game.

Kotronias-Miladinovic, AUG01/21, is one of the more active Taimanov lines. Black's Q and B battery keeps White busy, but here White's Be2 to f3 neutralized Black's play. Even so it was tough for White to get anything tangible.

Kobalija-B Meyer, AUG01/20, is one of those passive Hedgehogs where Black has no activity, allowing White to build-up at his leisure.

All the best to my chess friends!

Hello all!

Our August B54 to B59, most of the time Benko Sozin, update starts off with Wedberg-Barkhagen, AUG01/23, White had a minuscule pull until Black went nuts with 19...d5?!.I think Black is better off with ...e6 in the Nxc6 system. Black showed that playing ...h5 isn't good all the time in Gormally-Chandler, AUG01/24.

Keep an eye on B80 to 89 for transpositions starting with Chabanon-Fressinet, AUG01/02.

Till next month ...adios!
