March Update: - What's New

Sorry it's a bit late this month folks. I'll aim to be back on track for April's update.

Black again seems to be getting the upper hand in the d-pawn specials this month. Perhaps in the hurly-burly of international chess, the professionals have got the hang of White's tricky systems. So this month I appeal for your games, those played at your local club or on the internet. It's time to put the ball back in Black's court.

Torre Attack [A46 & D03]

Mansour, S - Ahmed, E/4th Arab Champions League 2002

White tries to play it safe against his higher rated opponent but as so often happens, simply plays into Black's hands.

Trompowsky [A45]

Ozyilmaz, A - Ersahin, B/Open Antalya TUR

White bamboozles his opponent with a dark-squared strategy in the h4 Tromp, which he promptly turns into a fully-fledged kingside attack.

Dombai, I - Berczes, D/Spring Festival 2002

Black tries a tricky new idea in one of the main lines of the Tromp. White makes one slip in unfamiliar territory and is immediately terminated.

Kessler, B - Kolus, L/Spring Festival 2002

Black demonstrates a keen eye for attack in one of the quieter lines of the Tromp. White had his chances, but failed to take them.

Pseudo-Tromp [D00]

Hodgson, J - Falentin, A/Bundesliga 2001-2 2002

Black tries to create a bit of confusion against Mr Tromp himself as early as move two. However, Julian Hodgson is not a man easily bewildered.

Colle-Zukertort [D02 & D04-05]

Atanaskovic, P - Lajthajm, B/ch-Serbia Leskovac YUG 2002 [D05]

In this game White tries to occupy e5 far too early and Black makes his overambitious opponent pay an extremely high price for leaving his king in the centre.

London System [D00 & A46]

Nikolaidi, E - Mourtzouni, M/Aphrodite Athens GRE 2002

Routine chess can be extremely dull chess, and in this example, White certainly pays the price for his lack of creativity.

Levar, N - Jurkovic, H/8th Hotel Opatija 2002

Black approaches the London system in an extremely creative way and is quickly rewarded for his imaginative play.

Stonewall [D00]

Sazanova, J - Molkova, O/ch-RUS Girls U20 2002

Black provides another perfect antidote to the Stonewall by developing his light-squared bishop to f5. White's chances of an opening advantage go up in smoke.

Barry Attack [D00]

Fierro Baquero, M - Arakhamia, K/Masters Wroxham ENG 2002

White treads an old path in the main line of the Barry, allowing Black to demonstrate a simple way to equalise.
