May 2000 Update

Okay guys,

Thanks again all of you for your mail. I've had some fantastic contributions to this site from some very strong players and I will share all info with you over time. Please read the grab bag for my reactions and do remember that this is the time for me to reply as I can't do so personally. Many seem to wonder whether stuff gets here, but it does. Well probably!

Yugoslav 9 Bc4

Accelerated Dragon

Semi-Accelerated Dragon

Anyway for this month the Yugoslav Attack bit includes three games on the 9 Bc4, …Rc8 without …h5 variation in 16 Nb3. You all know what I'm talking about. If not, check them out anyway as they are all very entertaining encounters.

There is a 16…Qc7 game(CW128 ) and two with 16…Re8, one with 17 e5 (CW126 ) and the other with 17 Qh2 (CW127 ). Gee what a good classification system I have!

There is a frankly outrageous game (if I am to believe what I am seeing) where Grandmaster Zelcic is drubbed whilst trying to get a Yugoslav Attack out of an Accelerated Dragon (and I'm not talking with an early Bc4).

Two other Accelerated encounters see Tiviakov winning a nice endgame in the Gurgenidze system (CW129 ) and Luke McShane romp home with White in another Maroczy Bind variation (CW130 ).

Finally hot off the press is a game which may resurrect the Semi-Accelerated Dragon as Black accepts the temporary king discomfort that accompanies 6…dxc6, see CW132 .

New Games

Yugoslav 9 Bc4

Space Invaders Black may be a rook down, but there is no stopping his huge passed pawn mass.

Wham bam thank you Maam! for Black in this apparantly tidy Yugoslav Attack encounter.

When pieces beat pawns Okay they can't promote, but in this storming Yugoslav Attack victory their other virtues certainly come to light.

Accelerated Dragon

Winning in the endgame Yes it is possible for Black to win with the queens off in the Maroczy Bind as an ex World Championship candidate demonstrates.

Keeping the queens on A fresh approach to the Maroczy bind in which Nd5 doesn't spell the end of the queens.

The Attempted Railroad White attempts to engineer a Yugoslav Attack from an Accelerated Dragon and he duly suffers the consequences.

Semi-Accelerated Dragon

The Saviour? A line possibly putting the Semi-Accelerated Dragon back on the map.
