Howdy everyone!

Our B60 to B69 Rauser section sees a Kozul sighting, but it looked bad for our hero. His pet line ...Ra7 was in the process of taking a serious beating when a massive cheapo presented itself. Winning on the spot! Play this at your own risk, see FED644. Tries other than ...Ra7 are ok for black.

The f3 variation continues its good run. Sax - Htun and Zubarev - Kalygin saw black suffering horribly. This line should be ok for black. I still think one of the ...h5 lines is ok. Either after ...h6 or not.

Yermolinsky has been a Rauser player for eons. in FED646 he puts in a workmanlike effort in a line that looks very drawish. See my fellow Rauser fans next month!

The B90 to B99 Najdorf update sees heavy action in the English Attack. Take a look at Kovacevic - De Firmian and De Firmian-Ruck both in the 6...Ng4 line. I believe this line is on the critical list. In both games white found the going relatively easy.

In Guid - Podkrizak white's 10 a4 didn't pose black any serious problems. I don't consider 10 a4 a threat to black.

Shabalov - Sutovsky saw black try something sharp vs the 6 f3 move order. After a while things looked good for white. A very unclear contest.

Galliamova - Hunt should be fine, but black didn't pay attention and was wiped out.

We conclude with Spraggett - Zagrabelny where white won a smooth positional game with the unassuming 9 Re1. This certainly deserves a look.

Good Luck!

Scheveningen/ English Attack

Greetings!

Welcome to the November 2000 B80 to B89 update. As always check here for more English Attacks. Sure enough we have one- it was Matthews - Arencibia where black's opening was fine, but then white went hogwild! Black shrugged the attack off and won fairly easily.

The quiet move h3 vs in the Keres Attack is underestimated in Leko - Sasikiran when white's play packed a punch!

I don't know what was up with black in Shirov - Van Wely. Black has resources in the Perenyi piece sac but he didn't find them.

We finish with Bintafrit - Campos in a ...Nbd7 Sozin. Black got clobbered after some inaccurate play. He gets good play with normal development or pawn snatching.

Sveshnikov/ Kalashnikov

Hello Sveshnikov/Kalishnikov enthusiasts.

For a change our November 2000 B32 to B33 sees three Kalashnikovs!

Fedorov tries it out twice FED644, Svetushin managing a draw, but vs Shirov was quite another story. White's line is much more aggressive then 6 c4. The Shirov game was a real butt kicking...Kalishnikov players beware.

Meijers - Shabalov saw the tame 6 c4, black played his trademark ...f5 idea achieving some kind of dynamic equality.

Our only Sveshnikov this month is Ponomariov - Rogozenko where black puts in a solid day's work. The...Bg6 and Be4...idea looks good.

This months B40 to B49 Paulsen/Kan/Taimanov update sees several J Polgar games.

In the first vs Shabalov she neutralizes white's aggressive intentions and equalizes comfortably, while the second vs Hracek led to a very strong attack. White has to be awake in these systems otherwise the wheels can come off fast!

Svidler - Tissir favored white, but 11 rounds later Lutz improved vs Shabalov and got a satsfactory game.

Happy Chess Hunting!

November is a quiet month in the B54 to 59 update. We only have a couple of games. Ponomariov - Milov is an irregular Keres Attack where black didn't find the correct idea. After that he was disposed of in nasty fashion.

A question that needed to be answered is "what to play against the Boleslavsky variation?" GM Max Dlugy played this way in the mid eighties and did quite well. So Vallejo Pons-Avrukh is one to look at.

Take Care everyone! See you in December.
