Hello everyone! Welcome to our B60 to B69 October Richter Rauser update.

This month we have alot of stuff to look at. The f3 lines continue to cause problems for black.

Check Benjamin - Gulko which had a tragic ending for white and yours truly getting obliterated by Shabalov. I still prefer my ...h5 over what Gulko played.

In Baklan - Svidler we see a repeat of Murey's Rh3 idea. Black was ready with 14...b4 and got a good game. Perhaps white can play without a4.

Black's opening was ok in Ivanovic - Damljanovic, but what was 17...h4?!. In Bojkovic - Madl black's 14...Qc5 looks suspicious and we finish withFedorowicz - Gurevich . I played Peter Well's suggestion of 7 Be2!? and my opponent replied with e6 which left me with a dubious feeling. White with proper play should get a nice edge. Good Luck to my fellow Sicilian players!

The B40 to B49 Paulsen/Taimanov updates see U.S. GM Serper playing the hedgehog vs A Ivanov. In this game white found a nice setup and tortured black.

Fedorowicz - Serper was very unclear and black missed some opportunities before going down.

In FED614 Sicilian expert Nick de Firmian shows Shabalov that in this tricky line getting a big edge before faltering.

We round out this update with Ponomariov winning impressively over Hillarp Persson. The young GM handles this position well. Enjoy and Happy Chess Hunting!

Scheveningen/ English Attack

Welcome to the B80to 89 Najdorf/Scheveneningen update.

As usual keep an eye on the B90 to 99 section. Sometimes the sections cross.

We start of with Solak - Bruzon. Black played what I consider the best method vs the English Attack. White's Nb3 looks new. It disrupts black's plan. Black drummed up counterplay and drew in a sharp battle.

Fontaine - Svidler sees black accept the Perenyi piece sac and cruise to victory.

Fritz - Van Wely is a strange one. The Dutch GM is a Najdorf expert, but the machine won in style. Good Luck!

We start off our Pelikan/Kalashnikov update with Asrian - Pridorozhni. White's 15 Bb5!? is looking like the best chance for an advantage. White got the better minor piece, control of d5 and black fell apart.

In Chandler - Darnstaedt we see the line with 10...Bg7. This seems to have worn out it's welcome as black once again suffered.

We finish with Shabalov - Yermolinsky where black's ill timed 12...Nb4 led to disaster. The problem with this Qb6 line is that it leads to a Benko System minus a tempo. ( This variation might belong in B40 to B49).

Good Luck to my chess friends around the globe!

Not a real heavy month for the B90to B99 Najdorf update.

Polgar - Leitao saw white play an interesting pawn sac. Black got a little tied up but it didn't look too bad.

Why don't people play 10 h3 for white against the 6...Ng4 stuff? I don't understand it. In Grischuk - Krush black committed a serious attrocity with 10...h6? making life easy for white and paid the price. Black's position without h6 is very playable.

Black's ...h5 idea continues to bring the desired results. Check Ponomariov - Cvitan where white couldn't make any headway. Good Luck!

We wrap October up with our B54 to 59 update. We feature 3 Benko systems. In Kaidanov - Fedorowicz white bailed out with 15 Qa5 when it was equal to slightly worse for black. The usual idea is the sharp tripling on the h7 pawn, the Rg7 and Qg8 defends. A very sharp game ensues, but black has resources.

Asauskas - Izoria is food for future thought. The pawn sac deserves a look since white's results vs other moves are uneven.

Jiminez - Mendez became a mess, but once again I just think a3 ideas are too slow.

We end the October 2000 update with Ponomariov - Milov where white slaughtered black's suspect opening. See everyone next month. Happy Chess Hunting
