Jan 2000 Update

This month's update covers 5 openings but the lion's share belongs to the Anti-Moscow Gambit which is developing rapidly.

Other highlights include much brighter news for black in the Chigorin, and Sergey Volkov`s original and fascinating anti-Meran set-up.

There`s also some real fun and games in my game against Rebel, which includes one of those crazy computer moves where "almost any other move would have been better, or even not moving at all!"

RS130 JAN00 An interesting and spectacular game. Nowadays it's extremely difficult to invent something new right from the opening, especially an entire set-up. This idea is likely to attract new followers...

RS138 JAN00

Features some quite unbelievable computer strategy!!!

In this rare line Black probably solves his opening problems. But the ending suddenly turns out to be too strange for a computer...

RS137 JAN00 In my introduction to the Chigorin Defence I claimed that the future of the opening was under a cloud. However, Black's interesting novelty here shows that I was, quoting IM John L. Watson, "over-dramatic".

RS131 JAN00 Nowadays Black's life is not easy in the Anti-Moscow variation and he has started to pay more attention to the old and almost forgotten continuations. The Bishop's sortie to b4 is one such possibility...

RS132 JAN00 Another old line which has been played only once before. Evgeny Sveshnikov won that game with Black but as we shall see he probably overestimated black`s position in his annotations...

RS133 JAN00 Another good idea from Alexander Beliavsky. It is doubtful whether black can solve all his problems in this line even with best play.

RS134 JAN00 A new, ambitious, but unsuccessful attempt to pose problems for Black. If you want to repeat Igor Novikov's idea then some good homework is needed!

RS135 JAN00 An interesting new idea from a young Spanish star. It works very well against a more illustrious opponent who finds himself in a completely lost position very quickly...

RS136 JAN00 . very important game for theory of this variation and a very exciting one too! White sacrifices stacks of material for the initiative...
