August'00 Update

Don't they say that the living is easy in Summertime? Down on the shop floor of the King's Indian Website it doesn't seem that way. The games keep pouring in, the opening remains as popular and as topical as ever and I have a devil of a job sorting it all out.

Two games from the British Championship feature prominently. Check out Summerscale - Hebden, a magnificent struggle in the Mar Del Plata Variation. After a novelty by White, Hebden strikes back with the spectacular 19…Nfxd5!!

On then to Ward - McShane, worth five thousand pounds to the winner. Ward keeps his head and wins in style.

The never-ending flow of ideas never stops. Take a look at Bronstein's Saemisch Queen Sacrifice, revived in Volzhin - Rohl with 13…Bd7!?,

out of Jeroen Piket's box of tricks.

Kuzmin - Kovalev is another outing for 6 g4.

I've never rated this move and indeed Black wins violently, but that's not the full story.

Luke McShane is back in action later in the update, improvising in the Classical 9 b4 with 9…c6!?, see KID572.

Any good ? What say you ? Crouch didn't know what to do.

You might contrast the styles of Grandmasters Mikhailevski and Csom in KID575 and KID576. What a difference!

You will see Ivanchuk and Judit Polgar on top form in KID573 and KID569.

And to top it off a rout in the Four Pawns Attack, hot from the Grecian summer circuit.

KID570 In another heavyweight clash 16 c5 is the novelty and it looks like a good one. Everything hinges on whether White can parry Black's upcoming Kingside attack, before cashing in on the Queenside, where all the advantages are his...

KID572 9...c6 is an interesting and little used sideline, best used against 9 b4, also possible via 9 Nd2 c6 !? 10 b4 a5. White is taken out of his preparation. The plan seems to be to disrupt White's projected Queenside advance before it really gets underway.

KID575 When one compares 7...Nbd7 with 7...Na6 the disadvantages are evident: The Bishop on c8 is obstructed and it's a less flexible move all round. What isn't mentioned is the stability which 7..Nbd7! affords- a quality which still attracts.

KID569 Maybe 9 exd5 is OK but here is a very good method for Black. Simple to understand too. Top priority is placed on controlling e4.

KID571 Just when you are souped up and ready to roll with 10 e5, he goes and plays 10 Nd2 instead! It's a good surprise weapon alright, not dangerous if Black knows his stuff but who is aware of the antidote?

KID576 This type of strategy- encouraging the opponent to misplace his pieces, is actually quite tricky to carry out. One must look as though one is doing nothing, although it's not like that at all. Suddenly 19 Nd5! highlights all the defects in Black's game.

KID573 One of Ivanchuk's very best. We see him tie Alonso Zapata up with a series of inspired tactical shots.

KID574 An idea which I recommended in 'Winning with the King's Indian' back in 1989. Black offers a Queen sacrifice in the style of David Bronstein and shows that there are still many unanswered questions in this highway of the Saemisch.

KID577 The ubiquitous ...Na6, it seems- there is no escape these days. Here, with White revving up immediately, it's important for Black to get his act together quickly.

KID578 Mc Shane seems unaware of an excellent 6th move for Black- probably because it was popular long before he was born!- which in this instance would have exploited the well-known Samisch expert's move-order.
