October'00 Update

Main Games

Greetings from the Riverside Studios in London where it looks very much as though Garry Kasparov is coming to the end of his reign as World Champion. I've been commentating on the match live for the benefit of the studio and Internet audiences and this introduction will be necessarily brief because I have to go back to work in a moment!

The Press Room around me is a hive of manic activity- will Kasparov get back into the match or won't he? With time running out I doubt it, but you never can tell...

I was hoping of course for some King's Indian games but Garry hasn't yet obliged. A pity for it would be very interesting to see how Kramnik reacts. Ah well, we will have to rely on other top players for our information.

Which is where this month's update comes in. Despite my heavy workload all the usual goodies are in place.

Got to go... Have a great month!

There's plenty more in this update, including the usual selection of HOT games (without commentary or analysis).

Classical

KID646 Gligoric at the peak of his powers! faced with an apparently winning move he unleashes a remarkable response. A full rook down, a calm king move leaves White helpless against numerous threats.

KID648 A move and an idea nowhere near as bad as its reputation in a position that could easily arise from a variety of move orders.

KID652 The move of the moment. Black attempts to disrupt and even break up White's intended Queenside advance almost before it begins. Theory attributes the idea to Zigurds Lanka.

KID653 A move very much in Hebden's style, refusing point-blank to let the opponent settle. It's also one of Black's best reponses to the flexible Gligoric System.

KID654 A solid outing for the underrated sideline 7...c6.

KID658 An interesting attempt to punish Black's uncompromising 7...Ng4 against the Gligoric System.

KID660 A shining technical display by the great Alexander Belyavsky.

Four Pawns

KID651 A very odd move that cannot go unpunished. White chooses a mature way- he quite happily sacrifices a pawn to accelarate his development and to sideline Black's pieces.

KID655 Black's uncompromising opening play is duly punished in the dangerously sleep-inducing Double-Fianchetto System.

KID661 A neat tactical shot shows up White's artificial-looking set-up.

Samisch

KID649 Eddie Gufeld is a hero of the King's Indian. Here's one of his lesser known victories using the defence, against a very strong Grandmaster.

KID647 Here's a characteristic Smyslov victory using his own system. It illustrates how, with only a small mistake from Black, this quiet method can work well. Queen.

Miscellaneous Lines

KID650 Quite in the style of Simon Williams and quite disreputable. Against this type of early flank attack, the Benko recipe is almost always good.

KID656 Another stroll for Yasser Seirawan in his pet variation. Black's Benko-style stake for the initiative merely leaves him with weaknesses for the connoisseur gleefully to exploit.

KID657 A dazzling display by an ex-Latvian which would have been fitting of his legendry countryman, the great Mikhail Tal.

KID659 shows how mindlessly castling long against Mark Hebden is rather like throwing a red rag to a bull.
