What's new - June '04
I'm really sorry that this update is so late! I don't really have too many excuses - I was playing a tournament in the Medoc to win my weight in top Claret (actually I was second, but still have a large collection of bottles on my apartment floor!) and as it was close to the Atlantic Ocean I kept finding excuses to do other things! English Opening
1...e5
[A28]: The Four Knights with 4 d4 makes an appearance in Simutowe,A - Sokolov,I. In the following position:
|
White preferred 7 e3 to the standard 7 Rc1.
Incidentally, a few days ago I had a game that went 4 a3 a5!? and here I played 5 d4 reaching similar positions except that Black can no longer play ...Bb4!
1...c5
[A30]: Kasparov,G - Adams,M features some deep Hedgehog theory from the World Number 1 (against the next FIDE World Champion, perhaps?)
[A33]: Another game from Kasparov, here he gives his seal of approval to 6 a3:
|
and later goes 'hogwild' as Fed likes to say! See Kasparov,G - Van Wely,L.
1...Nf6 & others
[A18]: Jeffrey Reep asked me if it was possible to answer 1 c4 e6 2 e4 with 2...e5!?.
By a curious coincidence the game Navara,D - Istratescu,A from just a month ago featured a Mikenas Attack with 3...e5:
|
On reflection I don't think this is too good, see the notes for my recommendation!
Réti
[A04]: Miroshnichenko,E - Krasenkow,M starts slowly but then features superb tactical play from move 8 onwards! An attacking gem!
[A14]: Talking of subscriber's questions, Craig Hall asked me my opinion of the move 11...Nb4!? in a mainline Réti:
|
and I noticed that it featured in the game Bareev,E - Kramnik,V, played a few months ago.
1 g3
[A00]: In Azmaiparashvili,Z - Mahjoob,M Black has just played the tricky 11...b5! in this Reversed Dragon style position:
|
but then was then hit by an amazing queen sac for only two pieces!
