What's New- July '01
|
Scheveningen
Hello to all my chess friends! Our July 2001 Scheveningen/Najdorf update sees a couple of interesting ideas.
In Gombac-Sax, JUL01/01, ...h6 is a good alternative for those of us that want to avoid the mess that comes from accepting the Perenyi piece sac.
Berg-Hillarp Persson, JUL01/02, sees an older variation where Black's standard ...Rxc3 exchange sac should provide good play. After 13...Qa5?! Black's Q was out of it.
Adios! Till next month.
Najdorf
The July 2001 Najdorf update sees a rarity in Stanford-North, JUL01/03,. A Polugaevsky variation vs Bg5. The Polu has fallen out of favor due to questions of it's soundness. Black needs to be seriously booked up to play it as things open up fast. In this game Black's theory was below par and he was brutalized.
Never forget the less popular lines which is easy to do if all we see is the English attack! Blanco-Ashley, JUL01/04, sees Black provide a good treatment vs the 6 g3 line.
Good Luck!
English Attack
The July 2001 update sees the continued popularity of the English attack.
We begin with 3 examples of De La Riva Aguado- Shirov. The first game, JUL01/06, sees Black get in trouble quickly. Black's Nh5 is out of play. Game 2, JUL01/07, was very unclear (if I had to choose i'd take White) White's K looked safer, but Black had chances. Game 3, JUL01/08, sees a different story as Shirov gets on top early and cruises to victory.
This Nb3 to a5 plan is another pain for Black as Fedorov-Ermenkov, JUL01/05, shows. Black's Nc8 set-up gives me the creeps.
I prefer the k side pawn storm to White's idea of f4 in Ashley-Ehlvest, JUL01/09,. Black generated big play vs the e4 point.
Bjornsson-Desmarais, JUL01/10, shows why g4 can be premature in some cases. 10 g4? d5! and Black is better.
Nakamura-Patterson, JUL01/11, sees Black play inaccurately with Qc7?! then White plays an instructive combo.
Good Luck!
Richter-Rauzer
Greetings and welcome to the July 2001 B60 to 69 Richter-Rauzer update. This month we review 3 different variations.
Lets start with Nijboer-Van der Weide, JUL01/12, where White's Qe1 continues to cause problems for Black. Black has trouble drumming up significant play.
My game with Morrison, JUL01/13, sees White try a tricky line. For a change I reacted correctly although I felt I could've gotten more.
J Shahade-Gulko, JUL01/14, sees an old move resurface. 9...Qb6 was popular a long time a go, but 10 Be3!? causes problems. White got the better of things anyway, 8...a6 is suspect.
See my fellow Rauzer fans next month!
Sveshnikov/ Kalashnikov
Welcome to the July 2001 Sveshnikov/Kalisknikov update. A light month with 2 Kalishnikov's both played by Nataf.
In the first game, JUL01/15, I like Bauer's handling of the opening as Black got into trouble fast.
Nataf managed to draw with Van Den Doel, JUL01/16, though Black looked somewhat worse there also. This line is giving the Kalishnikov some real fits. Might this variation be in trouble? Stay Tuned!
Adios and all the best from GM Fed!
Paulsen/ Taimanov
Not a lot of action in our Taimanov/Pausen Kan update.
In Shirov-De La Riva Aguado, JUL01/17, White varies from his game with Anand with a very minor improvement. Black's position looks very solid.
Bad news for Paulsen Kan fianchetto players. This variation has been suffering. White's simple plan of piling on d6 in JUL01/18, keeps Black bottled up with no hope of an active break.
Hope this update finds everyone well!
Classical Sozin/ Two Knights
Hello everyone! Hope this B54 to 59 July 2001 update finds everyone well. We have a mixed bag of stuff.
Lets start off with our lone Benko system vs the Sozin. In Schneider-Krush, JUL01/19, we see why Black's delaying ...0-0 can be useful. Black's ...h5 gives some serious counterplay.
White can't play the English Attack against everything as we see in A Rodriguez-Chess Tiger, JUL01/20, where the computer played like a tactical genius. After f3 in the classical 2 N's, ...e5 looks like Black's best reply.
We finish up with Van der Weil-Nijboer, JUL01/21, where Black once again tried the Nb8 to d7 in the Boleslavsky. Black drew but White looked to have an edge.
See everyone in August!
