May '00 Update
Scheveningen/ English Attack
Hello to all my chess friends around the world. I trust that this May update finds everyone well. In the B80 to 89 variations we see 2 well played attacks in McShane-H Olafsson and Pruess - Baginskaite.
Nedev - Psakhis and Bosnjak - Kutzovic are interesting and pertinent to theory.
Chapman - Rogers favored white and Cooke - Dembo is fine for black.
Sveshnikov/ Kalashnikov
Welcome to the B32 to B33 May 2000 Pelikan/Sveshnikov/Kalashnikov update.
Start with Videki - Giordanengo, in my opinion white's best vs the Lowenthal. The treatment is smooth and easy.
Ivanov - Shabalov saw the would be Kalashnikov get shredded in fine fashion. 6 a4 deserves serious attention.
Shabalov exposes 11...Ne7 as being not too hot as we start on the Svesh variation.
Tiviakov scores twice with white vs Van der Wiel and Reindermann.
Mueller - Khalifman and Palac - Nedev are worth a look.
Richter Rauser
The May 2000 B60 to 69 Rauser update sees a very mixed bag. First of all, no Kozul sightings.
In Ashley - Yermolinsky the variation maintains its solid reputation. It's becoming the top Rauser in terms of results!
In Kalishnikov - Ionov and Svidler - Iskusnyh both games were ok for black in the 7...Qb6 line.
We finish with Hebert - Arnett yet another Rauser that deserves a look. Enjoy and good luck!
Paulsen/ Taimanov
The May 2000 B40 to 49 Taimanov/Paulsen/Kan update sees 6...Qb6 strike again in Sorensen - Goldin.
Ulf Andersson easily handles the hybrid Keres attack in FED485.
Ricardi maneuvers nicely to defeat Van Riemsdijk.
In FED487 Nisipeanu plays an interesting idea in the opening and gets a promising position but needs luck to draw vs Kengis and in FED488 we finish with Christiansen squashing Kekelidze. Adios and good hunting, GM Fed.
Classical Sozin/ Two Knights
The May B54 to 59 Sozin updates sees 3 Benko systems in Schnneider - Goldin, Oral - Drei, and Rodriguez Gerro-Damljanovic. Black's results speak for themselves.
GM Epishin provides us with food for thought in Schneider - Epishin and Preusser - Epishin. It's an offbeat system, but he made it work.
Happy hunting, GM John Fed
Najdorf
We round out the May 2000 Sicilian update with B90 to 99 the Najdorf.
Ehlvest - de Firmian sees 10 h3! win again. From black's point of view the varation is in big trouble. Improvements are not in sight!
Aagaard - Hummel sees another Keres like attack score the point- black missed some chances though.
Atakisi - Froehlich shows that white must slow down black's a-pawn, and we end with Leitao defeating Thorhallson in a 6 Bg5 sideline.
Take Care, see you all in June. GM John Fedorowicz
