Novelty of the Month

The novelty of the month is from an extraordinary game played in the recent Scottish Championship. After 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 a6 Black wanted to play the O'Kelly variation but White came up with 3 c3 to enter a c3 Sicilian, only to be stunned by the outrageous 3…Qa5.

Upton - Norris is a gem of a game where White overcomes his temporary opening problems to create a very strong attack.

I have received e-mails from Janus Theron of South Africa and Noel Aldebol who comes from the USA. They are divided by thousands of kilometres but both want to know more about the sequence 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 d6 3 d4 cxd4 and now 4 Qxd4.

In the game Rausis - Djurhuss, White plays a tricky line to enter a favourable ending after just 6 moves and triumphs in style after 18.

Another example using the same forceful opening idea looks good in David - Janssen where White has an easy middlegame plan to follow.

A clear indication of the potential complications possible is revealed in Messa - Nunn where White quickly wins material forcing Black to defend very accurately.

The line with 4 Qxd4 is another twist in the fight against the Sicilian.
