Whats Hot?

Janos Flesch was a Hungarian Grandmaster who had a big impact on The Smith-Morra Gambit. An unusual idea of his against the fianchetto defence is explored in Quadrio - Candeias, where after the moves 1 e4 c5 2 d4 cxd4 3 c3 dxc3 4 Nxc3 Nc6 5 Nf3 g6 White attacks directly with 6 h4!?:

In the game Rohler - Kreisl White follow's Flesch's main idea but then forget the book moves!

Regan - Sebag sees Black fending off the attack with a solid defence.

Star game of the month

The star game of the month is Jonkman - Lukas, which is a tricky line of the C3 Sicilian, which results in a 12 move win for White.

Opening Survey: The C3 Sicilian [B22]

This month I take a look at the old main line 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 c3 Nf6 4 e5 Nd5 5 d4 cxd4 6 Bc4 Nb6 7 Bb3 d5 8 exd6 Qxd6 9 0-0 Be6 10 Bxe6 Qxe6 11 Nxd4 Nxd4 12 Qxd4 Rd8 13 Qh4 Qe2 14 Nd2:

The first important game is Acs - Schneider where Black fends off the attack and eventually wins.

Acs - Volzhin sees both sides playing adventurously.

The game Grbac - Saric shows how White can exploit a standard mistake in the opening.

A draw is always the likely outcome of San Marco-Goerlinger which is represents the solid nature of the main line.
