New ideas in the Rossolimo Variation

Due to popular demand this month 3 Bb5 in the Sicilian is analysed.

The Wijk aan Zee chess festival 2000 produced many fine games and one of those was Reindermann - Hendriks. After 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bb5 White has entered the Rossolimo Variation and Hendriks plays 3…g6 which is analysed in depth.

My thanks to Hinko Sauter for his comments on last month's game that featured Kasparov in Wijk aan Zee and I can guarantee that I will keep an eye on the Linares tournament for future developments. How does the best player in the world handle this opening? The game Kasparov - Salov gives an insight on how to attack.

If one had to write a book on miniatures you can save a place for Vasiukov - Velimirovic, a sacrificial feast that ends with White winning in just 25 moves.

If Black is looking for something different then 3…Qb6 might be the answer. In the game Perez - Gonzalez, White develops quickly and soon has a bind on the position.

All the games are annotated. If anyone wants to send his or her games to me just e-mail me at
