Kasparov approves the Kopec

Once again I am happy to report that a number of readers have sent in e-mails and a reminder to everyone that games are gratefully received. Sig Smith, Tallahassee, Fl USA asks, "My club players have become very interested in the Kopec System. Is there some reason that it isn't played more often on at higher level?"

The name of the opening will be a complete mystery to some so I will reveal it is sometimes the name given for the line 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 d6 3 c3 Nf6, and now 4 Bd3

is the start of the opening. It seems to me that if you look hard, a number of top players have tried the opening and it is worth checking out Kasparov - Rahn to see how the champ plays it. In this instance the scene is a high profile simultaneous display but still worth considering and the opening has been suggested as a possible weapon for his match against Kramnik.

The game Yudasin - Kuprechik features two very strong players and follows a main line with 4…g6 that leads to equal play.

If Black is looking to inflict a short, sharp shock then look at Golyak - Kudrin. The American plays 4…Bg4 and soon grabs the initiative putting pressure on his opponent that ultimately forces resignation after 23 moves.

Garcia Luque-Casares is a classic example of positive play by White. The difference this time is the specialist move-order featuring 4 h3 to avoid the pin …Bg4 before carrying on with the usual plan of Bd3.
