This month's collection features a couple of my own games, both rather painful losses from an otherwise successful tournament in Barcelona, and some new moves from the Olympiad.

c3-Sicilian 2...Nf6 3.e5 Nd5 4.Nf3 Nc6 5.d4 cxd4 6.cxd4 d6 7.Bc4 [B22]

Collins - Camacho Collados features the line 7...Nb6 8.Bb5:

I got a slightly better position in the middlegame, before accurate defence enabled Black to equalise and, ultimately, I chucked a piece.

In Collins - Spraggett Kevin played 7...e6 before mixing up his move order with 14...Qc7?!:

, after which I improve on previous games and generate a decisive attack before, again, messing up and ultimately losing.

c3-Sicilian 2...d5 [B22]

Godena - Wang Yue features a line of the c3-Sicilian which appears to be a perennial favourite of Godena, although he has several losses and no wins to his credit:

The whole game is a good example of both a sound defence for Black and how to generate winning chances against the c3-Sicilian in the late middlegame.

Rossolimo Variation 3...g6 4.Bxc6 dxc6 [B31]

Carlsson - Kozul features 7 a4!?:

and shows White's opportunities when Black delays his development. Carlsson breaks with d4 and gains an overwhelming position, winning after mutual mistakes.

Zaitsev Variation 6.Qd3 [B53]

Zviaginsev - Areshenko shows a position which can also arise from a Hybrid via the move order 3.Bb5+ Nc6 4.d4 cxd4 5.Qxd4 Bd7, and only now 6.Qd3:

White goes for a Maroczy Bind setup which ought not to threaten Black.

Moscow Variation 3...Bd7 [B52]

Bruzon Batista - Jones shows some ideas in the typical Maroczy Bind setup:

Gawain's later queen sacrifice is notable but White had chances earlier.

3...Nd7 [B51]

Adams - Dominguez features the unusual 4.c3:

Dominguez has good equalising chances out of the opening, before losing to a typical Adams squeeze.

See you next time, Sam
