What's new in August 2002?

Hi everyone,

I promised you a bumper issue this month and I don't think you'll be too disappointed. I have seven theoretically interesting, well annotated (if I say so myself!) games for you including the opening of a whole new can of Yugoslav worms with 10...Rb8. Anyway thanks for your mail. I'll do another grab-bag soon and in the meantime enjoy:

All this month's new games are easily downloaded in PGN format using ChessPub.exe, but to download the August '02 Dragon Sicilian games directly in PGN form click here: Download Games

Gallagher-Ward: and

Ernst-Carlsson: The start of what could be many games on this site with the so called 'Chinese' variation. Yes, it's the Yugoslav Attack 9 Bc4 Bd7 10 0-0-0 Rb8.

Only time will tell whether or not it will catch on.

Rowson-Tan: The recently popular 9 Bc4 Yugoslav Attack Kb1 and h4 system against ...Qa5. There is so much attention on this line that it requires no further explanation!

Marcantoni-Kosteniuk: A debut on this site with the Yugoslav 9 Bc4 Nd7 by everyone's favourite pin-up girl!

Carlsen-Anagnostopoulos: A possibly important idea for Black in the pawn grabbing Yugoslav 9 0-0-0 d5 line and "No", White didn't lose on time writing his opponent's name down!

Lanzani-Cebalo: More success for Black in the 9 0-0-0 line, this time with the solid 9...Nxd4 10 Bxd4 Be6.

Ward-McShane: Last month I wrote about how I attempted (but failed) to get a game on this site with White. Well this month I've succeeded even if I've bent the rules a little as a Samisch King's Indian transposes into a Maroczy Bind Accelerated Dragon!

See you soon

Chris
