December 2001 - What's New
Hi again! Crumbs doesn't time fly! Actually though I must confess that I didn't have as much post from you guys as I thought I had. Hence there is no grab bag this month despite me complying with a request to see the comparatively new 12...Re8 move in the still trendy 9 Bc4 line (see Delchev-Chatalbashev, DEC01/01). I'm sure that we'll be taking a more detailed look at that in the future. |
Although Vasiesiu-Jianu, DEC01/07, is a relatively standard 9 0-0-0 Nxd4 Yugoslav Attack this is a month of oddities.
I feature 2 games with the bizarre 8...h5 (9 0-0-0 is Khalifman-Shabalov, DEC01/05, and 9 Bc4 is Kobalija-Assev, DEC01/06). Don't expect that to catch on as the likes of Shirov-Topalov, DEC01/02, could well do.
In the Accelerated Dragon both Tsuboi-Bastos (7...Ng4), DEC01/03, and Munoz Pantoja-Kosanovic, DEC01/04, are offbeat Maroczy binds.
I'm hoping that the new system will soon be in operation for you guys when theoretically chugging through this site should be quite a bit easier.
Until next year!

New Games
Yugoslav 9 Bc4
DEC01/01 Playing cat and mouse: A newish idea involves delaying ...Nc4 in an important variation.
DEC01/02 Pawns not pieces!: Black appears to be experiencing success through play contrary to popular advice (i.e. in the Dragon Black should attack with pieces rather than pawns).
DEC01/05 The cup of tea 1: Clearly this bizzarre 8...h5 system which is either pretty new or is experiencing something of a revival won't be everyone's cup of tea. It's not even as though he made an obvious mistake but loses anyway.
Yugoslav 9 0-0-0
DEC01/06 The Cup of tea 2: The real outcome of this game remains a mystery to me but my view on the whole variation is in less doubt. Could it be that 8...h5 should be utilised only in blitz games?
DEC01/07 Off the leash: The Dragon bishop gets blocked but escapes to perform its usual heroic duties.
Accelerated Dragons
DEC01/03 The easy ride: Without any risk a theoretical innaccuracy in the opening allows White to benefit with by all accounts a smooth win.
DEC01/04 Overshooting the mark: That's what Black's bishop appears to do in this sideline Accelerated Dragon variation. Is it really so bad though?
