July 2001 - What's New

Yugoslav 9 Bc4

Levenfish

An early Bc4

Hi guys!

Well I'm writing this on my travels. Having just played a tournament in Copenhagen I am now at the British Championships.

I've only five offerings for you this month but that includes a couple of interesting novelties.

You will find more on the 12...h5!? of Visweswaren-Ward, JUL01/01, in the soon out 'Winning With The Dragon 2' although had it not only just been played, I would certainly have put it in too.

Grafl-Farago, JUL01/04, adds further woe to Black in an already troublesome 9 Bc4 Yugoslav Attack line, but things aren't looking quite so good for White in the Levenfish if Perelshteyn-Shahade, JUL01/02, is anything to go by.

Black also recently seems to be doing okay in the quiet Bc4 lines. Though significantly outrated, Black holds a draw easily in Wedberg-Carlsson, JUL01/03 whilst Z'berg-Golubev, JUL01/05 is an instructional convincing win.

I'll see if I can track down some interesting Accelerated Dragon games for next month but for the time being, take it easy!

JUL01/01 Playing by the book!: Black succeeds following a recommendation in a book not yet on sale.

Yugoslav 9 Bc4

JUL01/04 Mate on h8: That's how this theoretical encounter ends. Needless to say Black needs to find an improvement!

Levenfish

JUL01/02 Like a fish out of water: Alright my titles are getting worse(!) but there is nothing but suffering for White in this 'Levenfish' variation.

An early Bc4

JUL01/03 Smooth Equality: A quick unbiased annotation of a game in which Black stands fine and is evidently happy with a draw.

JUL01/05 Squeezing the light-squared bishop: It's all very well White having a pawn on d5 as there is pressure against Black's e7-pawn. But what of the reduced-scope bishop on b3?
