What's new in July 02?

Well guys I'm back from my chess playing trips and I have some first-hand Dragon news to share with you. From my own point of view things started out in a promising fashion as my first round of the Copenhagen Open was an Open Sicilian. A fun game to play too, alas I only had one other in my next competitive 21 encounters! That was against Joe Gallagher in the 9 Bc4 Bd7 10 0-0-0 Rb8 Yugoslav Attack Chinese variation and you'll be able to read my annotation to that in next month's update.

While I'm on the topic of me being such an intrepid reporter for all my beloved subscribers, I'll have you know that in the Politiken Cup I found myself White against Sergei Tiviakov. Although I am a main line 1 d4 player, I couldn't resist the temptation of whipping out 1 e4 against this long time Dragon and Accelerated Dragon expert. Unfortunately he thought for several minutes before responding with 1...c6. Truth be told I had no refutation in store and I didn't even know what variation I was going to play. Nevertheless he obviously decided that the Caro Kan was a safer option and after an uneventful draw I was chuffed to hear him say that he would have played the Dragon against anybody else but me!

All this month's new games are easily downloaded in PGN format using ChessPub.exe, but to download the July '02 Dragon Sicilian games directly in PGN form click here: Download Games

Anyway check out:

Hector-Aagaard: Yugoslav Attack with the wimpy 8 Bc4 and 9 Qe2:

Robertsson-Ward: It's ...Qa5 with Kb1 and h4 as in 'Winning With The Dragon 2' but with a new failed attempt at a refutation.

Timoschenko-Mutschnik: A repost of a recently supplied game but with a couple of alterations to the annotations. This line as above but with g4 too has recently become popular and I have at least one game lined up in this variation for August.

Kongsted-Pert: Yugoslav Attack 9 0-0-0 Bd7 style

...and a crushing victory for Black.

Volokitin-Tiviakov: A semi-accelerated style first appearance on this site involving two stars of chess today.

Work your way through those and by all means submit any queries. I'll be back again real soon with a bumper issue so stay tuned.

Regards

Chris
