September '00 Update

Hi folks!

Six games for you this month, a new review and a bad tempered letter (see ).

I was quite excited when I ordered Secrets Of The Sicilian Dragon, Eduard Gufeld & Eric Schiller, eagerly hoping for lots of home brewed analysis that would overturn many current assessments. To find out if it lived up to expections see my review...

Yugoslav 9 Bc4

Yugoslav 9 O-O-O

Accelerated

Time for some Accelerated Dragon action: Tiviakov features once again, negating the the Maroczy in a Gurgenidze system. An all Scandinavian tussle sees Curt Hansen overstretch in the main line whilst an unusual move order sees Black getting the chance to strike out against the bind ahead of schedule, see CW154.

In the Dragon, Black gets trounced in the 9 Bc4, …Qa5 variation. Also in the Yugoslav Attack, White takes a hot pawn in the 9 O-O-O Bd7 line and that man Fedorov suffers again with 9…d5. Good to see he is sticking to his guns though!

Until next time

Chris

Yugoslav 9 Bc4

The f7 weakpoint!? And no I'm not talking about the Italian game! What happens when a key pawn is lost.

Yugoslav 9 O-O-O

Queen and pawns versus pieces Good value entertainment, but are we any nearer to knowing the answer?

The isolanis and the pretty queen Is that why Black loses or is there more to it than that? A newish 9 0-0-0 d5 variation under the microscope.

Changing one's mind To be or not to be a Maroczy, that was the question! Too much deliberating by White though allowed Black the chance to make a timely strike.

Second time lucky?! Could an advantage be proved second time around against the same opponent in the same variation. It seems not and hence we await the third installment!

Trying too hard? Trying too hard or is the win just not there? This is the problem that White is faced with. Black is so solid in these Accelerated Dragon positions and overpressing is oh so common.
