The Swashbuckling Wing Gambit

The Wing Gambit using the moves 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 d6 and now 3 b4!? has been the prelude to various spectacular games. It is well worth playing at club level and some leading players have also successfully tested it against masters. That Nigel Davies also recommends it in his repertoire suggestions on this site means it deserves a more detailed examination.

The game Keres - Storm Herseth is an early example of the gambit in the hands of a brilliant player and an easy nineteen move victory is very impressive.

If you had to think of one of the all time great attacking players then Bronstein would instantly come to mind. In his hands the gambit looks fantastic and Levin is not able to cope with the strong pressure, see Bronstein - Levin.

A much better defence is evident in the game Kende - Karolyi where Black grabs the pawn and fends off the attack.

Finally, the example Goldsmith - Dickson played in Australia is a hard fought draw where both sides could improve on their play. played in Australia is a hard fought draw where both sides could improve on their play.

My thanks to Noel Aldebol and Miss J.Corrigan for their suggestions for future columns and keep sending the e-mails to garylane@chesspublishing.com
