To kick off the April update I will be taking a look at some of the ideas mentioned in the forum. IM Andy Martin |

The Austrian Attack Pirc 5...c5 6 Bb5+ has proved difficult for Black in recent years. Someone asked about 6...Bd7 7 e5 Ng4 8 e6 Bxb5 9 exf7+ Kf8!?
which is very rare indeed and after closer examination I cannot find anything too wrong with this move. You will find improvements for Black in Korneev - Cebada Benitez.
The PATZER variation 1 e4 d5 2 exd5 Qxd5 3 Nc3 Qe5+
scores a crushing victory in this update. I give some home analysis in Webb - Buckley.
The Two Knights variation of the Caro is due for a revival. A subscriber mentions how tough it is for Black to equalize, particularly after 1 e4 c6 2 Nc3 d5 3 Nf3 Bg4 4 h3 Bxf3 5 Qxf3 e6 6 d4!?
You'll find a dveastating win for White in Parligras - Svetushkin.
Another query featured the Four Pawns Alekhine where 9...Qd7?! was mentioned as a decent way to avoid the mind-bending complications of the main line 9...Be7. Ask Nigel Short about that as he goes down horribly to Kotronias using this very same line in Game 3 from the recent Gibralter Masters. Do you fancy Black's position after 16...Na8 ?
Moving away from the forum we have Kasparov grinding down Anand at Linares in the Caro-Kann (see Game 8). I point out a significant improvement for Black in that game: 23...b5!
We have Bologan mystifying Vlassov in Game 6 with an early novelty e.g. 1 e4 c6 2 d4 d5 3 e5 Bf5 4 Nc3 a6!? 5 Be3 h5!?
A further Caro sees a further Black win after patient defence speedily turns into decisive attack: 25...Rh4!
Evgeny Sveshnikov is the victim, see Game 7.
Finally Kotronias is back wiping out the BANKER variation 1 e4 d5 2 exd5 Qxd5 3 Nc3 Qd8!? in Game 1. But as so often improvements are readily to hand and after 12...Bxc3+ 13 bxc3 Qa5!
Candela Perez would have been the one with the initiative.
Have a nice month.
