My sincere apologies, both for the lateness and the brevity of the August Update. This is my most busy family time of the year with all the children at home and still trying to maintain a full work and holiday schedule.
Back to normal in September.

Scandinavian Defence

Our games this month feature another outing for 5..Ne4:

in Game one Black comes unstuck.

Al Modiakhi-Tiviakov from Amsterdam shows a newish move in the 3...Qd6 Scandinavian, 7..c6!?:

Jonathan Parker used this move to beat Stewart Haslinger in the recent British Championship - more on that next month.

Pirc/Modern Defence

Game Three is a tremendous display by Black in the Classical Pirc and this against Anatoly Karpov! This with the sharp 10...b5!?:

Another old game, but inspiring and instructive.

Again from Amsterdam (like the Tiviakov game), Game Four shows Jonathan Parker in action himself, but being ground down.

Caro-Kann

Chernaiev - Lalic is a London league match game, and you will not find it on the TWIC site. Black's chances in the Panov Caro are amply demonstrated, the critical position arising after 13 Bd3:

Black defends patiently, then strikes!

I wish you all a great month, normal service resumed next time.

Andrew
