The games this month are as interesting as ever.
Scandinavian Defence
In Ferguson - Martin, White demonstrates an edge in the Scandinavian after 2...Qxd5 3 Nf3
|
In view of my experience in this game I will play 3...Bg4! next time and go for the sharper lines.
Alekhine's Defence
There's a wipe-out in Ishkhamov - Chernin with the Alekhine after Black unsuccessfully tries to revive some old theory. 7 Ng5 d5?!
|
is simply no good. Black's position depends on Alburt's 7...e6 for survival.
Pirc Defence
Luguvoi demonstrates that the Pirc move-order is still viable against an early Be3 by White. Black's position after 9...e6
|
is a coiled spring, waiting to expand.
Caro-Kann Defence
High quality Grandmasters debate the Caro-Kann at the Wijk-aan-Zee tournament.
Anand - Karpov is a real corker- does Black have enough compensation for his piece after 16...0-0-0 ?
|
All will be revealed.
White demonstrates magnificent technique in Kramnik - Bareev. The position after 18 Be3
|
looks nothing for White but Kramnik grinds out the win.
The Caro-Kann features prominently in other games:
Morozevich revives 4 g4!?
|
annihilating Zontakh in under 20 moves.
Sadvasakov takes Korchnoi apart in the 6 Bc4 e6 7 Nge2 line
|
Finally John Fedorowicz struts his stuff in the US Championship using the Panov-Botvinnik attack. After 15 c4
|
, he is souped-up and ready to roll!
Please write to me at AMartin@ChessPublishing.com if you have any questions or queries and I wish you all a very good month.
Keep well until we meet again in March
