Welcome to the July Update.

Scandinavian Defence

Our first game shows how Igor Glek interprets the Scandinavian in a very simplistic way:

I might add that it works for him!

Alekhine's Defence

The next two games feature the 4 Pawns Attack in the Alekhine, by popular request. Both see Alex Baburin handling Black. I must say I prefer his 5...Bf5! of Game Two:

, to the main line with 9...Bg4:

which seems rather passive, see Game 3.

Caro-Kann

On to Game four and the legendary Emory Tate taking up the bait and ending in the crate. Check out Vescovi's crunching 24...Bxg2+!!:

The Caro's continue with the complex Shirov - Bologan, where Shirov unleashes the sharp novelty 9 dxe5!?:

On to Game Six and Gawain Jones spicing up the Caro-Modern with 4 Qf3!?:

Something different!

Game Seven seems like life in the slow lane when Farago tries 7 Bd3:

, a notoriously 'equal' line. White is outplayed in 29 moves.

And then Topalov - Vallejo to close, where Black is outplayed in a semi-ending after 15...Qa5:

, more from a lack of confidence than anything else.

Traditionally the August update will come from the British Championship, and this year I'll be in Swansea, Wales, soaking up all the best games for you.

Until then, cheerio! Andrew
