This month:

Scandinavian Defence

Nisipeanu delivers a strong message to Eric Prié in his favourite variation. Does Black need to play 8..Qb6?!:

See Game 1.

Alekhine's Defence

Smolin - Pervakov gives a rosy picture of Black's chances in one of the main lines of the Alekhine after 12...f5!?:

but I demonstrate that this is not necessarily the case.

Ledger - Palliser is a couple of years old but raises some interesting questions about 5...c6!?:

Pirc/Modern Defence

Izoria - Inarkiev features a White novelty in a topical line of the Austrian: 10 dxc5:

Another Austrian sees White hitting out against 6...Nc6 with 7 e5:

Check out Narciso's response in Game 5.

Caro-Kann

Over to the Caro and the remarkable little game Firman - Makarov. Have you seen 5 Bg5 before?

Then staying with the Caro for the last two games, Mchedlishvili pushes the boat out against the Panov with 12...Bxd4:

and comes unstuck. I hint in the notes that this might be playable for Black, but difficult - see Game 7.

Finally, Oleksenko - Kovalev confirms the solidity of 4...Bf5 in the classical main line. Black's play on the light squares throughout this game makes a strong impression.
