1 e4 Various September 2003 UPDATE

Back to the grindstone after a scorching holiday in France. In the long evenings after the kids had gone to bed The Veresov by Nigel Davies and My Great Predecessors by Kasparov kept me out of mischief... almost.

IM Andy Martin

I think this is the right moment to ask for some feedback. Do you like the way that I organise this site or are there changes that could and should be made? Simply email me here at Chess Publishing and I will give all your suggestions serious consideration.

The games themselves this month are of great interest. Admittedly, a 12 move draw doesn't sound so good, even it is between McShane and Dreev, but the Fantasy Variation of the Caro-Kann is featured

and the notes are important.

Our second Caro features a distinct oddity: 1 e4 c6 2 Nc3 d5 3 f4!?

This is an idea of Dutch IM Dirk Van Geet and has even been recently employed by Sergei Tiviakov! Undercover of a grip on e5 White attempts to launch a Kingside attack. Original play, so look at Game 2.

The third and final Caro is a game that must not be missed. After a quiet opening Apicella socks it to Christian Bauer with 30 Qf6+!!

Three Scandinavians complete this month's set:

Spangenberg - Llores more or less shows how to refute 1 e4 d5 2 exd5 Nf6 3 d4 Bg4?!

in several ways. I'm afraid that this idea is heading out of fashion, never to return.

In Zorko - Vukovic, Black tries to reinvent the BANKER variation with 6...b5!?

This doesn't look too hot but White fails to break down Black's defences and goes on to even lose. Watch out for some crucial notes in the main line after 6...Bf5 - here Black is still on the board!

Finally, Sprenger - Martyn where Black gets wiped out quickly after an early exchange sac. Improvements are at hand and you must judge the position after 17...Bd6

for yourselves. If Black can't make this position work he has to look elsewhere.

Best Wishes,
