Cheparinov - Mitkov: For many years Nikola Mitkov was successful defending a rather suspicious line but here it seems that he finally faced real problems, caused by a strong idea from Ivan Cheparinov.
Khenkin - Maze: In the game Topalov - Carlsen, Wijk aan Zee 2007, White quickly and comfortably got a full point in a rare line which was thought to be fine for Black since 1929!
|
Everything seemed to be a product of home analysis and it might well be so, but in fact the whole concept had actually been demonstrated just two days before in this game - Black's life in the line with early castling does not look easy now.
Laznicka - Sargissian: Nowadays White often plays an early Ra1-c1, making the typical ...c7-c5 advance more difficult for Black:
|
In this game Gabriel Sargissian finally played it in two steps and eventually outplayed his opponent but it seems that White might still find a way to get the better chances.
Navara - Aronian: David Navara did not want to waste time here and sacrificed the attacked pawn on a2:
|
Aronian did not hesitate and, despite his delayed development, did not face serious problems. It seems that White has to look for something more convincing or perhaps this approach is simply not that promising for him...
Radjabov - Aronian: Levon Aronian beat Teimour Radjabov in this crucial battle. Teimour was dominating the event, being one and half a points ahead, but here, despite playing a rare line, he faced excellent home preparation and found himself in an endgame one pawn down right after the opening. Then he did everything possible to save the game but Levon's technique was equal to the task.
Morozevich - Aronian: Alexander Morozevich came up with an interesting novelty here and gave Black problems which Aronian eventually failed to solve. However, the end of the game was highly disappointing for White, who twice missed a fantastic win in time trouble - don't miss this!
Moiseenko - Savchenko: Here Black played a rare but interesting line - an early ...c5-c4 push called White's bishop to f5 where it was exchanged:
|
However, in the endgame which arose a few moves later, White maintained a certain pressure and after mutual inaccuracies managed to obtain a decisive advantage, which he eventually spoiled.
Harikrishna - Savchenko: Boris Savchenko came up with an early ...c5-c4 again and achieved good play but then he misplayed the endgame and was lucky to escape.
