This time I tried to update some rare lines which hadn't been touched for many years. It seems that some of them are getting right back on track... enjoy!

Geller Gambit [D15]

Markos - Erdos: Playing White's g5 knight lunge without clarifying the situation on the Q-side is an interesting attempt to give Black problems in the Geller Gambit:

but it seems that Black can obtain good counter chances.

Meier - Neubauer: The main line of the Geller Gambit gives White decent compensation for the pawn but Black can also be satisfied with his position, and in this game he successfully exploited his opponent's inaccuracies ... though his play was also not quite perfect!

Queen's Gambit Accepted 3.e3 [D20]

Khenkin - Berkes: An interesting idea, 7.Qe2+ here:

, gave White some edge in the ending but he eventually failed to find a way to maintain his small advantage.

Main Slav 5...e6 [D16]

Morozevich - Jakovenko: This complex gambit line of the Slav Defence has recently gained some popularity:

It is similar to the Geller Gambit (see D15) but the absence of Black's dark-squared bishop gives White more chances to seize the initiative. Actually it seems that Black just begun to face problems in this line, which has been known to be acceptable for him.

Matlakov - Bologan: Viorel Bologan tried another way to extinguish White's initiative and he actually succeeded, though later blundered in time trouble. However, White still seems to be able to maintain the better chances in the early stages.

Von Hennig-Shara Gambit [D32]

Williams - Kemp: Here Simon Williams demonstrated the more precise way to maintain White's advantage after 16...h5:

while a common alternative way actually had a hole.

The Tarrasch Defence 6.dxc5 [D32]

Hillarp Persson-Wahlstrom: A rare option to counter the Tarrasch Defence has become popular this year:

Here White came up with a piece sacrifice but Black should have defended with precise play. However, the whole approach might promise the better chances for White.

QGD Lasker's Defence - Main line 9. Rc1 [D56]

Bacrot - Svetushkin: Etienne Bacrot maintained some pressure:

and eventually converted it into a full point thanks to his opponent's inaccurate play.

Till next month, Ruslan
