Slav Defence [D10-20]
DEEP FRITZ - Kramnik: Here Vladimir Kramnik drew our attention to a rare option in reply to 3. e4 in the QGA. As a rule, the ...b7-b5 advance is very risky at such an early stage but it seems that Black has good chances to transpose into rare but playable lines of the Slav Defence:
|
Kramnik was doing very well and slowly outplayed the computer, obtaining reasonable winning chances, but he later went astray and then missed checkmate in one move!
Ribli - Naumann: Another idea which has recently been brought to our attention by Vladimir Kramnik was tested here. It seems that White has to do some good home work in order to find a promising way forward - here he simply got a worse position...

Moscow Variation [D43]
Zhao Xue - Karjakin: Zhao Xue inflicted a heavy blow on Sergei Karjakin - she came up with a very interesting idea in a line thought to be harmless for Black:

Meran and Anti-Meran [D45-49]
Navara - Erenburg: Black has recently faced problems against this Anti-Meran approach. In this game a rare position arose on move 19 where White's bishop alone paralyses the opponent's entire army!
|
Black's pieces hardly had any available moves so White simply chose a piece to trap. It was certainly the queen...
Mamedyarov - Topalov: Topalov allowed White to maintain his strong knight on d6 by 22 f5?:
|
and after that White's hands were freed

Catalan Opening [E01-09]
Kramnik - DEEP FRITZ: Vladimir Kramnik chose a wise strategy against the computer - the Catalan Opening helped him to get a reliable position, and the subsequent simplifications led to an endgame with a stable advantage:

but then he missed excellent winning chances...
