Lasker's Defence [D56-7]

Vyzmanavin,A - Klovans,J: If Black closes the center by ...e5-e4 he should try to play actively otherwise White will easily take control of the position...

Anastasian,A - Miladinovic,I:

The pawn advance ...e5-e4 seems better than the exchange ...e5xd4 as it does not open files for the White pieces. After closing the center Black managed to get excellent attacking chances on the K-side, which is not quite usual for Lasker's Defence... It's time for White to find something in this line.

Zakharevich,I - Biriukov,O: Once again, the isolated d-pawn gives White a lot of active possibilities. In this game Black came close to neutralising the opponent's strong bishop on b3 but White managed to maintain his initiative in a fairly attractive fashion.

Lautier,J - Kramnik,V: The advance ...e6-e5 without the preliminary ...d5xc4 deserves serious attention. White's chances look slightly preferable but Black can certainly be satisfied with his position and in this game Kramnik managed to solve the problems easily.

Zvjagintsev,V - Cherepkov,A: In this game Black captured with ...Ne4xc3 before playing ...c7-c6 and it gave White an interesting possibility to avoid the line we have considered in the game Lautier - Kramnik/Monaco 1999 by playing 11. Be2!? instead of 11. Bd3.

Then Vadim Zvjagintsev showed excellent technique and gave his opponent no chances to hold the slightly worse endgame.

Khalifman,A - Yusupov,A: One of the most principled lines of the Lasker Defence. Thanks to the better Q-side pawn structure White has obtained a small advantage but very active and precise play by Arthur Yusupov gave White no real winning chances.

Karpov,A - Yusupov,A: As usually in Lasker's Defence, White was able to get only a small advantage but this time wonderful technique by Anatoly Karpov kept Black under pressure and just a few inaccurate moves by Arthur Yusupov led to real problems.

Zvjagintsev,V - Bologan,V:

Here Viorel Bologan introduces a strong novelty in the principal line and equalises easily. This is the last word of theory for Lasker's Defence - now it's White's turn to find something.
