This update is completely devoted to new ideas in the recently finished Russian team championship. Many interesting innovations were played but, as you will see, most of them came from the white side and brought excellent results. Black was suffering in many openings which were supposed to be quite reliable, and in many games White just crushed his opponent!
Enjoy these exciting battles and let's look forward to the next update, which, most probably, will feature the Chess Olympiad in Turin. Ruslan

Chebanenko System [D10 & D15]

Mamedyarov - Volkov: This rare line led to very sharp complications:

Both sides defended their ground without making any compromises - Shakhriyar Mamedyarov sacrificed a piece and later a rook, when his Q-side pawn avalanche finished off one of the main Chebanenko experts.

Lputian - Bareev: Smbat Lputian introduced a new idea, which presented Black with certain problems in a line where he did quite well recently. White's energetic play gave him a powerful attack but a rather unexpected omission allowed Black to escape.

Queen's Gambit Accepted [D20-29]

Mamedyarov - Kharlov: Another beautiful win from Mamedyarov - he just crushed one of the best QGA experts. He chose a rare option, 11 Rc1!?:

but perhaps his approach deserves much more attention as White always had the better chances.

Sakaev - Sorokin: Here Black failed to solve the problems in a line which is supposed to be acceptable for him. White quickly got a strong initiative and finished the game in style, but it seems that Black's play can be improved.

Marshall Gambit [D31]

Riazantsev - Galkin: Black came up with a novelty on move 21 of this rare line, 9 Bd6 e5, which has recently gained some popularity:

He did somewhat better than in the game Mamedyarov - Tregubov/Reykjavik 2006, but the result was again disastrous and White always had more than sufficient compensation for a couple of pawns. It seems that Black's defence must be better prepared in this line.

Vitiugov - Frolyanov: White deviated from the game above, which had been played just 5 days before, but his initiative was extinguished with precise defence. Yet, it still seems that he could prove the better chances with more precise play - the line does not look easy for Black at the moment...

Vienna Variation [D39]

Tkachiev - Kharlov: Here Black chose a rather suspicious line in the Vienna Variation and was eliminated quickly and confidently. He probably mixed his lines but anyway the variation looks difficult for Black...

Potkin - Kharlov: Vladimir Potkin came up with a surprising attempt to put pressure on Black in the Vienna Variation - he just sacrificed his central pawn by 6 Bxc4!?:

and got excellent compensation thanks to his comfortable development. This option has never been seriously taken into consideration but perhaps a new chapter is going to be written in the Vienna history...

Moscow Variation [D43]

Filippov - Yevseev: Black tried to improve upon the game Radjabov - Vallejo Pons/Morelia Linares 2006, but failed to solve all the problems. The battle was very complicated and full of mistakes - in the end Black just lost the thread and gave up everything.

Cambridge Springs [D52]

Najer - Bareev: Here Evgeny Najer came up with a strong-looking novelty in a line which was known to be quite playable for Black. It eventually worked very well and it seems that White's chances were always better - the ball is back on Black's side!
