What's New - November 2001
Welcome to the November update, which comes to you a little late, but I hope to complete the next one very soon. Ruslan Scherbakov |
Botvinnik Variation
NOV01/01 A novelty on move 24 allowed Black to get an acceptable position but soon he blundered and lost. To be fair, the idea does not look promising as White's play can be obviously improved.
Queen's Gambit Accepted
NOV01/02 Ruslan Ponomariov successfully managed to defend a position which was recently supposed to be dangerous for Black. In two battles against Alexey Dreev he scored 1,5 points and this victory brought the Ukrainian team gold medals at the World Team Championship! NOV01/03 A very interesting and important game in a recently fashionable line. In fact, it puts many questions which can be answered only by thorough analysis and future battles.
Main line Slav
NOV01/04 Some players were probably wondering why neither Kasparov nor Kramnik captured the pawn which Morozevich offered them as a gift. This game seems to provide a good answer...
NOV01/05 Here Black tried to revive a dubious line by a rather surprising novelty. The attempt looks interesting but hardly promising...
NOV01/06 A rare appearance of the spectacular 10. Ra3!? - White players prefer to play with an extra piece vs pawn rather then to give up the material. Here Black introduced a new continuation but it didn't change the assessment of this curious variation - it is still very unclear.
Anti-Moscow Gambit
NOV01/07 An interesting attempt to revive the line which seemed to be almost refuted. Yet, White's chances still look preferable...
Cambridge Springs
NOV01/08 At first sight everything is clear in this game - White conclusively refuted Black's dubious idea. However, there is probably a more convincing way in the critical position - strangely enough, an old and very strong idea of Russian master Solomon Gotthilf didn't find any followers...
