February Update: - What's New
Hi again! The d-pawn specials take a bit of a battering this month, as I've decided to present several model games from Black's point of view. But have no fear, as I'm sure that White will, famous film star would say, be back! Aaron Summerscale aaron@chesspublishing.com

You can also download the February '02 d-pawn specials games directly in PGN form here:
Trompowsky
A45: Dmitrenko, V - Gavrish, L/Kaissa Open Kharkov UKR 2002
Black once again is severely punished for his greed in the Tromp. And result, his eighth move innovation is unlikely to catch on.
A45: Zichichi, A - Acs, P/10th Open Valle d'Aosta ITA 2002
A strong Grandmaster shows exactly how to deal with an unusual line in the Ne4 Tromp.
A45: Povah, N - Wells, P/Open Portsmouth ENG 2002
Another strong GM provides an excellent example of what Black should be looking for in the Sicilian Tromp.
Pseudo-Tromp
D00: Kovacevic, B - Stubljar, A/7th HIT Open 2002
The following game should contain a health warning. "Queenside fianchettos can damage your health", if you don't look after your light squares properly.
Colle-Zukertort
D05: Chanelle, P - Velicka, P/XVIII Open Cappelle la Grande FRA 2002
The main line of the Colle with dxc5 continues to give White nothing but headaches, and this month's game is no exception.
A47: Bely, A - Simantsev, M/Kaissa Open Kharkov UKR 2002
In a perfectly normal-looking position, Black springs a deadly trap upon his unsuspecting opponent. Worth taking a look at if you are searching for an answer to the Colle-Zukertort.
D05: Krasenkow,M-Yu Shaoteng/Corus B Wijk aan Zee NED 2002
Here we see two heavyweights battle it out and bash each other around for a while. Both sides had their chances in this game, which ends hard fought draw.
London System:
D02: Wijesurija,G-Al Mutwae,H/13th Asian Cities 2002
Black is lulled into a false sense of security and his danger sensors kick in too late. By the time he has woken up, his queen has been snared by a lowly pawn.
Stonewall
A45: Savin, B - Ovod, E/Petrov Mem Open 2002
Black provides a reliable way of dealing with a very early f4 by White. I continue to be amazed by the popularity of 2.f4.
Barry Attack
D00: Nyback, T - Blehm, P/GMB Bermuda BER 2002
The Barry is suffering a bit at the moment, with nobody willing to champion its cause. Black tries an unusual system which works like a dream.
