May 2001 - What's New
Greetings! Welcome to the May 2001 update Aaron Summerscale aaron@chesspublishing.com

Trompowsky
MAY01/02 This a particularly pawn greedy line. After already moving twice, the Black queen embarks on the most time consuming of ventures. Some players will do anything for an extra pawn...
MAY01/03 Black choses a passive system of defence in the 2...e6 Tromp. Perhaps he was in awe of his illustrious opponent, but the Tigers of the chess board like nothing more than chasing timid little rabbits.
Pseudo-Trompowski
MAY01/01 The reversed French never seems to work that well for the second player. I always wonder if Black's trickery in this line is worth the effort -- with his dark squared bishop outside his pawn chain, Black has simply allowed White a good French position.
Torre Attack
MAY01/04 With a solid system like the Torre, Black will often have to take risks in order to try and win. However, for the strong player, such risks are part and parcel of tournament play, in pursuit of the full point as Black.
MAY01/05 As we saw in the survey last month, 6.Qc1 (in the main line Torre with 1...d5) offers White no chances for an opening advantage. It simply gives Black a pleasant game.
MAY01/06 White broadcasts his sacrifical intentions in the following game. However, Black is strangely powerless after some earlier inaccuracies, to prevent the finale.
MAY01/07 White finds an original way to attack the Black king position in the Torre King's Indian. Black misses the danger behind White's creative queen maneuvre, and is punished for his lack of concentration.
London System
MAY01/08 I simply can not understand the attraction of these positions from White's point of view. Black has a clear plan that gives him a positional advantage on the queenside.
Colle
MAY01/09 Essential knowledge for all Colle players. An extremely nice approach, although not new by any means. This is an important pawn sacrifice for all Colle players to be aware of.
Blackmar-Diemer
MAY01/10 A Comedy of Errors. Both sides make their fair share of errors in this entertaining game. I have a feeling that White's opening experiment will not be repeated by many players.
