Smyslov Variation
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nf3 Bg7 4.Nc3 O-O 5.Bg5:

One more example in the sharp line 5...c5 6.d5 h6 7.Bh4 d6 8.e3 g5 9.Bg3 Nh5 10.Bd3 f5 11.Nd2 Nxg3 12.hxg3 is Efimenko - Reinderman.
Fianchetto Variation
Morozevich - Radjabov is included because it is, well, Morozevich and Radjabov! Otherwise, 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nf3 Bg7 4.g3 c5 and now 5.Bg2 cxd4 6.Nxd4 0-0 7.0-0 is rather the English Opening.
Fridman - Pruskin is a great win for Black in the line 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.g3 Bg7 4.Bg2 O-O 5.Nc3 d6 6.Nf3 Nbd7 7.O-O e5 8.e4 exd4 9.Nxd4 Re8:

And now 10.Re1 (instead of the more usual 10.h3).
5.h3, 6.Bg5 system
|
Here we have another great game by Black, in the line 6...Na6 7.Nf3 Qe8 8.Be2 e5 9.d5 and now the little known 9...Bd7. See Avrukh - Milov.
Classical with 7.Be3
|
In the topical line 7...Ng4 8.Bg5 f6 9.Bh4 g5 10.Bg3 Nh6 11.d5 Nd7, White recently tested 12.0-0 (instead of the most usual 12.Nd2) at the top level. See Wang Yue-Radjabov.
Classical: 7.0-0 Nbd7
|
Here Black could do worse than playing the line 8.Qc2 Nh5 9.Rd1 Nf4 10.Bf1 c5!, see Beliavsky - Shchekachev.
Classical: 7.0-0 Na6 8.Be3 & 7.Be3 Na6 8.0-0
8...Ng4 9.Bg5 Qe8:

For 10.Re1!?, which was played by Kramnik versus Topalov in Nice 2008, and recommended by GM Markos in his book, see Kasimdzhanov - Pruijssers. 10.Re1 is hardly killing, but Black also has other concerns in this system...
Classical: Bayonet Attack
9...Nh5 10.Re1 f5 11.Ng5 Nf6 12.f3 Kh8 13.Rb1 (Ponomariov's move):
|
The novelty 13...c6 (suggested by GM Markos) was mentioned in the previous update. But the further 14.Be3 Ne8?! of S.Savchenko- Gorovykh, can hardly be a good advert for Black's new idea.
Till next month, Mikhail
