What's New- January '02

Welcome to the New Year! I hope that 2002 is a very happy and successful year for you. Here at ChessPublishing.com we have plenty to keep you entertained.

IM Andrew Martin

Two of Britain's finest players slug it out in a state of the art Four Pawns Attack 6...Na6, JAN02/01. Parker innovates late with 22 Qd2

but it may be that 22 Rf3!

is a more promising way to massage Black's position.

The imagination of Alexei Shirov is fired after Gyemesi hits with 11 g4?! in JAN02/02

Say no more!

Adventures in the Classical Mainline include 10...a6!?

, Janev, JAN02/03, and Ye Jiangchuan relying on 13...Re8

, Lanka's idea, in a big game against Ivanchuk, JAN02/06. Van Wely features in a battle royale against Fedorov, JAN02/09, although there Black's opening play is most peculiar. Check out the unique idea of Nh5-f4-h5-f6-e8! leading to 16...Ne8

Fedorov achieves a regular position several tempi down.

He will say that he has tempted White into playing moves he wouldn't want to normally make. I don't believe it for a second!

In the Fianchetto system Georgiev keeps calm with 8 Ne1!

, when faced with the adaptable 7..Bf5 variation, JAN02/07.

Mazock demonstrates that 9 Nxd5!? is still worth a look in a sideline of the Samisch. Unfortunately he blunders at a critical moment; you will find out exactly how by accessing the game JAN02/10.

And spare a charitable thought for poor old Squarci, JAN02/08. Just look at the White Queen after 28 Qh1 !

Oh dear !

All this and much more awaits you. Go to it!

JAN02/03 This variation can still pack a considerable punch. If Black's chances cannot be revived in the Bayonet 9 b4 mainline, I forecast that interest will be revived in the early capture on d4.

JAN02/04 If you can remember the heyday of the 6...c5 variation then you are nearly as old as I am! Actually, it went out of fashion because White calls all the shots. He can decide with 7 0-0 to play a Maroczy Bind (in itself very pleasant for him) or he may push forward, a line which promises a risk-free advantage. Is Felgaer trying to surprise Van Wely and shunt him into some unfamiliar branch line?

JAN02/05 Here we are, back at the critical battleground of the modern King's Indian.

JAN02/06 Black places his faith in a holding operation, delaying the Kingside advance until later.

JAN02/08 THE COMICAL QUEEN

JAN02/09 Fedorov isn't lacking in ambition. Here Black tries to take White in an all-board struggle, first puncturing him on the Queenside and then invading with the Knight. With more space and the Knight on e7 still to surface, I prefer White.

JAN02/01 I am convinced that 6...Na6 is an excellent reply to the Four Pawns Attack. In essence it is the introduction to a very sound plan. Black simply develops flexibly, a creative waiting move if you like, and will respond accordingly to whatever White comes up with.

JAN02/07 Black will argue that 7...Bf5 is adaptable. If he can follow up with . ..Ne4 and ...d6-d5 he may reach a very solid position. The pedigree of this move is exemplary- it received an outing in the 1957 World Championship match between Botvinnik and Smyslov. I personally feel it gives White a little too much of the game.

JAN02/10 9 Nxd5 is a move which Psakhis and Yusupov have employed amongst others. It is doubtful whether it is better than 9 cxd5, retaining more pieces on the board, but it sets up a positional trap based upon the pin at f6 which Black cannot ignore. Essentially, White intends Ne2-c3,keeping a Knight entrenched on d5. Black must capture sooner rather than later to ensure that this does not happen.
