May 2003

Welcome to the May Update!

Hi everyone,

I am back from my travels (I won't talk about the chess in Vegas but the poker went well!) and as promised I have prepared a double issue to catch up the month I have slipped behind (admittedly each one has slightly fewer games than normal). In the May issue I will deal with the Classical while in June I shall take a look at other variations.

Just for a change (!) we shall kick off with another Bareev - Radjabov Bayonet Attack. This time Bareev won but he didn't deserve to.

In the recent European Championship in Istanbul Lastin was successful a couple of times with the 10 Be3 (Korchnoi) variation.

Lastin - Reindermann was an extremely wild affair where Black probably didn't play the most critical line.

In Arlandi - Gallagher I played awfully but 14 Rd1 is very unusual and not so easy to deal with.

In Volkov - Nevednichy we see White attempting to improve on last month's Damljanovic-Radjabov game but he doesn't really get anywhere.

Shabalov - Perelshteyn also features a new move in a line I have examined recently but White was definitely in trouble in this game.

And in Huss - Gallagher I managed to survive a scare in the opening and eventually register a full point.
