What's New- November '01

Greetings. It's that time again. This month, we have some real goodies for you.

IM Andrew Martin

First up we see Miso Cebalo fending off a vicious assault from Ramon Vera, NOV01/01, in his favourite 6...Bg4 variation. White launches the rocket with 8 h4!?

but it doesn't work out as planned.

Two games from Ilya Smirin illustrate the ups and downs of his interesting style. In NOV01/02 he has Zilberman on toast after some ingenious opening trickery e.g. 12...Bg4!

but falls foul of Tukmakov, NOV01/04, attempting to spice up a tedious position e.g. 12...Qd3?!

Then we see a wonderful game Gelfand-Kanstler, NOV01/03. White hits with a novelty e.g. 19 Nb5!?

but his Knights have to go to the ends of the earth. Then comes 23...Bh3!!

, the move of the month, and Black crashes in with a remarkable attack.

There are some explorations in the Fianchetto 6...Nbd7 mainline, none of which are encouraging for Black. Stohl makes 9 b3!

look like a very good move indeed in NOV01/10, and when Nalbandian tries to be creative in a similar position ie 12...h6?!

, the tactics don't work for him and he runs aground against White's rock-solid position, NOV01/09.

Finally,Alexander Beliavsky may have refuted the Dizdarevic Variation!

Check out 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 d6 3 Nc3 Bf5 4 f3 e5 5 d5 e4 6 Be3!!

for his top-notch demolition of Hickl in NOV01/06.

I'm off to Spain soon, seconding at the World Junior Championships. I wish you all a very good month.

NOV01/01 After the Black Knight drifts away from the Kingside White begins a direct assault. Intuitively, I feel the idea is dubious but Black must create immediate central counterplay in order to survive.

NOV01/02 White tries a very old line, the teeth of which have been drawn.

NOV01/03 14 a4 is in vogue. White introduces numerous ideas with this move, not the least of which is the defensive/offensive Ra1-a3 at some point.

NOV01/08 7 Nf3 is quite rare these days. Black must not forget what to do or he can end up with a poor game.

NOV01/04 White becomes the psychologist, and plays on Smirin's aggressive instincts.

NOV01/05 Black's tenth is a small provocation. It is certainly surprising that Black is willing to allow e2-e4 'for free', yet weaknesses appear in the White camp after this apparently 'natural' move.

NOV01/09 I don't really understand the point of Black's 12th move. Short of giving the Bf4 a poke with ...g6-g5.

NOV01/10 White tries to do without h2-h3. Of course, if he can get away with it then 9 b3 is a very useful move.

NOV01/06 Hickl specializes in offbeat play and he has no respect for big names. From move three, Beliavsky has to come out and fight!

NOV01/07 Against Black's original opening White adopts a no-nonsense, straightforward approach; centralize and watch the other player suffer!
